Music education major or performance major? That is the question? People seem to think that these two professions are worlds apart and along with that, they seem to think that music education majors are far less inferior to those seeking the performance degree. Why is that? It’s assumed that perf. majors get more attention and therefore have the better skills, the better musicianship to be greater musicians. This is totally false. Here at Westminster, we all take the same music theory classes, have access to the same pianos and have an infamous variety of voice faculty. It all just depends on the directions we choose to lead these luxuries. Perf majors perform their talents in mass audiences. Music Ed majors also perform…they just do it in a smaller setting and without getting all the praise and glory. And who is to say that this type of performing is inferior to the “real” kind? As I recall, music education majors are the ones that lay the foundation of musicianship within students. So it is our job to be the finest musicians possible in order to get the next generation of music education majors AND performance majors on their way to stardom, whether it be in an opera house or a music classroom.
